Do I need a south facing roof?
Due south is the optimum orientation for modules; however, not everyone has a perfectly oriented roof. South-east and south-west roofs are the next best options, but east and west orientations are also acceptable as long as shading is not an issue. The production losses are approximate 10-15%, although specific losses are calculated during the site visit.
When your two best options are East or West, you may wonder if there is a better choice? In locations outside Alberta where the price of electricity for home owners can fluctuate and get more expensive in the afternoon you would want to think strategically. Choosing to install the modules on the west-facing side of your building would produce greater power at peak times; thus, you would see greater savings.
If warranted and to be proactive it might be wise to choose the west-facing roof over the east-facing one!
